FEV LIONESSES 0
Shaw Cross Sharks 18
GIRLS U16S PREMIER DIVISION
The new look Lionesses took to the field for their first
league match of the season against one of the league favourites Shaw Cross. Lionesses Started the game well making good
ground with runs from Poppy Adams, Ellamai Anderson and Abbie Kennedy. With Layla Austin directing play well from acting
half the Lionesses were on top in the early exchanges. Half backs Tegan Sant and Olivia Phelan took
the lions forward, creating good opportunities for Adams, Kennedy and Faith
Thorp, only for the strong Shaw Cross defence to hold firm. A couple of mistakes from Lionesses saw Shaw Cross
gain some good field position and cross over the line against the run of play
for the first try of the game, converted 0-6.
Lionesses again came back strong with good play from Phelan and India Thorp. A lovely chip kick from Sant almost saw
Katelan Gale go over under the sticks, unfortunately the ball just beat her to
the dead ball line. Shaw Cross went
close on a couple of occasions but were thwarted by good defence from Destiny Sampson
and Charlotte Whipp. Both teams continued to play good rugby in atrocious
conditions, with both going close before the interval. Half time 0 – 6 Shaw Cross.
A much improved Shaw Cross came out for
the second and started putting pressure on the Lionesses. Following a number of mistakes and a few dubious
decisions the Lionesses were now on the back foot. More good tackling from substitutes Maica Laing,
Ellie Stogden, Marnie Wrigley and Hayden Coney kept shaw Cross out only to see
them score under the posts shortly after, conversion missed 0 - 10. In their
worst spell of the game Lionesses allowed Shaw Cross to score 2 more tries both
out wide to make the score 0 -18. With
Phelan now coming into the game more the Lionesses rallied again for the last
10 minutes. Runs from Anderson, Tilli Mitchel and Libby Clark set up good field Position before the
Lionesses looked like they may get rewarded for their great effort when Austins
pass almost put Whipp under the posts, only for a last gasp tackle from a shaw
cross player. Best for Lionesses were
Anderson, Adams and Phelan, while Coney showed great promise.
