U14s National Cup Journey Ends in Tough Encounter with Methley

Final Score: Featherstone Lions U14s 10 – 34 Methley U14s

The Featherstone Lions Under 14s exited the National Cup this weekend following a challenging fixture against a clinical Methley side. In a game of two distinct halves—and an unfortunately premature conclusion—the young Lions showed flashes of brilliance but were ultimately undone by a tough first-half period.

Hughes Ignites the Lions

The game couldn't have started better for the home side. In the opening exchanges, Noah Hughes produced a moment of individual magic that left the Methley defence standing. Picking the ball up deep in his own half, Hughes turned on the pace to round the cover and sprint 70 yards for a sensational solo try.

A Difficult Opening Period

Despite the perfect start, the remainder of the first half proved difficult for the Lions. A series of unforced errors combined with uncharacteristic lapses in the defensive line allowed Methley to take control of the momentum. The visitors were ruthless in their execution, piling on the points to move into a commanding 34-6 lead.

Responding Before the Break

To their credit, the Lions refused to fold. Just as the halftime whistle approached, Caiden Simpson found a gap in the Methley line to power over for a vital score. The successful effort reduced the deficit to 10-34 at the break, giving the Lions a glimmer of hope and some much-needed momentum heading into the second period.

Game Cut Short

The second half was barely underway when the contest was brought to an abrupt and disappointing end. Following an on-field brawl involving multiple players, the referee took the decision to terminate the match early.

While the Lions will be disappointed to exit the National Cup under such circumstances, the opening brilliance of Noah Hughes and the grit shown by Caiden Simpson provide plenty of food for thought as the team returns to league action.
