Final Score: Featherstone Lions 8 – 34 Hunslet ARLFC
Featherstone Lions ARLFC kicked off their 2026 campaign with a true "test of mettle" at Millpond Stadium, welcoming NCL Premier Division heavyweights Hunslet ARLFC. Facing an opposition that has been a benchmark of amateur rugby league for years, the Lions knew they were in for a physical afternoon from the first whistle.
A Seesaw Opening
The first 20 minutes were a masterclass in defensive intensity. Both sides traded blows in the middle of the park, with the Lions matching Hunslet’s physicality and went close themselves on a couple of occasions. However, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock, In a moment of high drama, a seemingly certain try for the home side was snatched away when the Hunslet winger intercepted a pass destined for the lions winger, only to see the Hunslet man, sprinting the full length of the field to score the first try of the game.
Lloyd Ignites the Fightback
Refusing to be rattled, the Lions hit back almost instantly. Jack Lloyd provided the moment of the half for the home fans, producing a sensational solo effort. Lloyd showcased both footwork and raw power, beating three defenders to bulldoze his way over in the corner.
The momentum appeared to be shifting, but fatigue began to play a role. While Hunslet were in their third competitive outing, this was the Lions' first game of the season. Hunslet took ruthless advantage of that "match sharpness" gap, scoring 22 unanswered points in a blistering 10-minute window. By the interval, the Lions found themselves trailing 4-28.
Second Half Resilience
The second half saw a much more disciplined and even contest. The Lions' defensive line stood firm, restricting the Premier Division side to just a single score in the second forty.
The Lions added a highlight of their own through fullback Elliott Bell. In a display of pure pace and clinical finishing, Bell rounded the Hunslet winger on the outside to touch down in the corner, much to the delight of the Lions faithful.
Looking Ahead
Despite the 8-34 final score, there is plenty for the coaching staff to be proud of. The Lions proved they could go toe-to-toe with the elite for large periods, and the second-half stalemate showed the potential of this squad once the early-season rust is shaken off.
Josh Hardcastle was awarded the Man of the Match for a tireless performance that epitomised the Lions' spirit.
