The Featherstone Lionesses U16s kicked off their season in spectacular fashion with a hard-fought 24–10 victory over Wetherby Bulldogs. In a game defined by strong forward play and clinical finishing, the Lionesses proved too strong for the visitors in their opening fixture.
The home side started with real intensity, putting Wetherby under pressure from the first whistle. The deadlock was broken when Millie delivered a perfectly timed short ball to Freya, who sliced through the defence to score the opening try. Liv added the conversion, giving the Lionesses an early 6–0 lead.
Maintaining their momentum, Millie soon turned from provider to scorer, crossing the line herself shortly after to extend the lead to 10–0.
Both teams then battled fiercely through the middle of the pitch, but Featherstone’s clinical edge showed again when Lexi spotted a gap and powered over, pushing the scoreline out to 14–0.
Wetherby Bulldogs refused to back down and hit back before the break, crossing the line to narrow the deficit to 14–4.
The Lionesses responded with some of their best rugby of the match. After a sustained period of pressure, Ruby showed tremendous strength with a powerful drive to crash over the line, extending the lead to 18–4.
The Bulldogs briefly threatened a comeback when they found space out wide, sneaking down the wing to score and bring the score to 18–10.
Despite the pressure, the Lionesses remained composed. In the closing stages the Featherstone pack took control with a series of powerful carries, laying the platform for Ruby to crash over for her second try of the game, sealing a deserved 24–10 victory.
It was a performance full of determination and teamwork from the Lionesses, setting a high standard for the season ahead.
